Can I just write one cause and one solution for situation questions?
ONE CAUSE AND SOLUTION OR TWO?
There is no rule to follow for these type of questions. It's important that you read the question very carefully and fulfill the requirements of it. Some situation questions ask for more than one cause and solution like the example below.
"Obesity is becoming a widespread health problem nowadays. What are the causes and what are the solutions for this?"
Other questions use terminology that is more flexible, and could be addressed with only one cause and solution like this question.
"Traffic is becoming a major problem in cities. Why is this and what can be done to solve this problem?"
Sometimes a question could ask for 2 causes and 1 solution like the answer below, so it's very important that the question is read carefully in order to make sure that the requirements are fulfilled.
"More and more people are suffering from diseases like Parkinson's Disease earlier in life. What are the causes for this, and what can be done to solve this?
There is no set way of dealing with a question like this. However, I do recommend writing 2 causes and 2 solutions even if 2 causes are asked for, and only 1 solution is requested. Below is a suggested way of structuring a situation essay.
WHAT IF I ONLY KNOW ONE CAUSE, OR ONE SOLUTION?
Don't panic; it is possible to write 1 cause or 1 solution even if 2 are asked for and not lose marks. This is done by making it clear that the cause or solution that you write is the only one you are aware of. This makes it clear to the examiner that you fully understood the question, but lacked the knowledge to give a full response. In this case, you won't be penalized. The writing exam is to test your linguistic skills and not knowledge, and a part of that is understanding the question.
To summarise, analyse the question carefully, and write a response accordingly. If you only know about 1 cause or one solution, make the examiner aware of that.
