Do you want to write the most interesting essay? Confess. I'm sure we all want to, but the question is, do we need to? Will we gain marks for showing the examiner how cultured we are? The simple answer to that is no. Yes, you read that correctly, NO!
It seems as if the main goal of exam-takers sometimes becomes trying to impress the examiner with ideas and information. It gets to the extreme that candidates don't even complete the task, and end up missing important parts of the question. Some also seem to think that this is the best opportunity to be discovered as the next Einstein 😂.
The fact of the matter is that linguistic skills are being tested in the exam, and not IQ or knowledge. In addition there are more suitable times for showcasing skills and knowledge than in the IELTS exam 😜.
Marks in the writing exam are given for:
◯ Task Achievement: How many parts of the question are addressed, and how well they are addressed.
◯ Coherence and Cohesion: How consistent, logical, and connected the ideas are presented.
◯ Lexical Resources: How well vocabulary is used in regards to range and accuracy
◯ Grammatical Range and Accuracy: The range and accuracy of grammar

In conclusion, writing an interesting essay will not benefit you in any way in regards to marks. Focus on fulfilling the requirements of the question by presenting a well developed answer that is consistent, connected, and has a variety of vocabulary and grammatical structures.
