Can I add new information in the conclusion?

The conclusion is the place for summing up what has already been stated in the body of the text. It is not the place for introducing new ideas. When new ideas are introduced in the conclusion, there might be confusion as to whether the conclusion is actually a conclusion. This is especially true when a linker for a conclusion , such as "In conclusion", isn't used to start the paragraph.

Many candidates use the conclusion to introduce their opinion. This is fine if the opinion has been fully explained in the body of the text. If this is the case, nothing new is being introduced in the conclusion. The problem comes when the candidate starts to justify their opinion in the conclusion starts to support their position with things that haven't been mentioned in the body of the text.

One of the reasons why candidates make this mistake is because they feel that they might not have reached the word count and they think they can make up for the lack of words in the conclusion. This is a big mistake, and can have a negative effect on the mark for Task Achievement.
